"Of all my projects in general, the National Grand Theatre of China was the most important, the most difficult, the most significant." (Andreu)
ln 1999, Paul Andreu won the competition launched by the Chinese government for the construction of the National Grand Theatre of China in the centre of Beijing, not far from Tiananmen Square, the Great Hall of the People and the Forbidden City. lnitially a parallelepiped, the Opera House took the form of a large ellipsoidal dome made of titanium and split in two by a curved glass roof. lt is surrounded by water like an island in the middle of a lake and is built within a park. lnside, the building contains three performance halls and a public area.
