"The Sphere is deliberately a self-contained place in which the pleasure of the space itself is equal to that of looking at the collections." (Andreu)
Built in the maritime basin in the renovated district of the Osaka harbour, the design of the Maritime Museum is based on a geometric shape: a glass dome that seems to float on the surface of the water in which it is mirrored by its reflection. First of all, a boat from the Edo period was placed on the water. The internai structure was built around it. The glass dome, 40 metres in height and 80 metres in diameter, was fully assembled in an outdoor factory and then towed across the Bay of Osaka and lifted over the structure which it covers.
