"The Arche is an active simplicity, the cloud is a necessary counterpoint." (Andreu)
ln 1982, Danish architect Johan Otto von Spreckelsen won the competition for the design of a monumental work for the main square in the La Défense district. His project was for a large arch in the form of a hollowed-out cube to close the historic axis of Paris without blocking it. Paul Andreu was appointed project manager. After Spreckelsen's death in 1987, Andreu took charge of the completion of the work. With English engineer Peter Rice, he installed a Nuage [Cloud] made of taut canvas in the central aperture of the structure, which serves to bring the monumentality of the site down to a human scale.
