Rétrospective

The event is over
With Days, Tsai Ming-Liang's new feature film, presented in competition at the 2020 Berlinale, finally coming to cinemas, the filmmaker has also made an original short film for the "Où en êtes-vous ?" (What stage are you at?) series, conducted a masterclass and engaged in many public events. Alongside all this, Tsai Ming-Liang presents an original exhibition entitled "A Quest".
Since Rebels of the Neon God, his first film in the mid-1990s, filmmaker Tsai Ming Liang has been associated with the Taiwanese new wave, preceded by Hou Hsiao-Hsien and Edward Yang. In 2003 he composed a nostalgic and impassioned ode to the power of film, the unforgettable Goodbye, Dragon Inn. Each of his thirteen feature films and more than twenty short films, including some for television, thus blend a form of aesthetic asceticism with formal attempts that sometimes reinterpret the genre. The Taiwanese filmmaker depicts his island as a haunted terrain. For nearly thirty years he has exploited the mute power of his favourite actor, Lee Kang-Sheng, and recounted – with The Hole in 1998, Stray Dogs in 2013 and The Wayward Cloud in 2005 – the incommunicability between men, and desire, their only escape.
Since the film Face in 2009, Tsai Ming-Liang has participated in many exhibitions. In 2012 he began the series of Walker Films, a thoughtful work on the concept of slowness, with nine works to date, in which Lee Kang-Sheng makes his way through urban landscapes.
