The story centres on a brother and sister whose parents work as ticket sellers in a cinema in Taipei.
The older sister spends most of her time studying or working in an ice-skating centre, while her younger brother is still at primary school. One day, the latter wins a writing competition by recounting his own adventures while playing truant. In the meantime, tragedy is taking shape, with the sister is involved in a case of involuntary murder during a sexual transaction.

While hoping to make a film about a medium, Tsai Ming-Liang, equipped with a DV camera, was caught up in a gathering around another god. A man in a trance, the girls on stage in a flashy karaoke bar, a power cut. The camera discovers fish and underground passages.
"I decided to use the simplest and most basic filming method. It changed my way of seeing things. By filming this underground passage, I didn't feel I was on a shoot but that I was filming with my eyes." Tsai Ming-Liang
