Transverse
1964
Transverse presents itself as a repertoire of abstract forms or spare parts variously combined.
After his studies in New Zealand, Bill Culbert was awarded a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London. He then developed a fascination for the region of Luberon, where he went on to spend most of his free time, never losing contact with his homeland, which he represented at the 2003 Venice Biennale, and where he made several public commissions. He taught painting in Nottingham. Then sculpture in Reading. After a post-cubist vein and before a period of Op art, this painting accompanies a series of racks of mechanical components and anticipates the sculptures by assembly.
