Arrival at Croagnes I
1962
Culbert discovered the Luberon region on his way along the "pilgrimage" of Sainte-Victoire Mountain, following in the footsteps of Cézanne, a journey that would have a decisive influence on his work.
The arrival at the hamlet of Croagnes is the subject of several versions, so important was the event. Here, a cubist composition rests on a strictly geometrical base. ln between, one can imagine a moving vehicle. Three genres, three eras cohabit in a kind of personal memo, both prospective and retrospective. Culbert knows where he comes from, he doesn't quite know where he is going yet, but his work will blossom under the raw light, a stone's throw from an ochre quarry.
