No one before Culbert knew how to see a light bulb in a glass of wine with a ray of sunshine through it.
Light shone through Bill Culbert’s work throughout his life, just as, since 1978, its avatar the fluorescent tube through many salvaged objects. Like an archaeologist, he surveyed the rubbish dump in Sault to extract a whole collection of jugs and other plastic containers. ln these objects, he considered the industrial artefact and the evolution of tastes in colours. He was also interested in the residual effect of light on objects baked and annealed by the sun or caressed by the anything but minimalist beams with which he adorned them.
