Porte-bouteilles II
1994
A tribute to Marcel Duchamp can be seen in this spectral self-portrait.
But let us highlight the reversal that Bill Culbert made to the 1914 readymade from which he takes the title and let us observe that the antipode of Paris is somewhere in New Zealand, his country of origin. ln both cases, the bottles are empty. Here, the silhouette is made up of the opaque shadow cast by the sun, from which the artist seems to protect himself with a cap. ls it a front view or back view? And where is the camera? ls it hung around Culbert's neck, controlled by a timer? Or is it in the hands of an accomplice stalking the ghost? No one knows.
