In Kempinski, Beloufa takes us to Mali in a science-fiction documentary that defies all logic, where the inhabitants of a village are invited to express their own visions of the future. They speak of their present, but also come up with genuinely futuristic accounts and imagined, surrealistic visions, where men couple with cows, cars talk and rockets spy on people's lives – all in the middle of the village during the Malian night. The works of Neïl Beloufa are full of fragmented experiences of vision and memory. The artist makes play with the stereotypes that surround and form us. His video installations often take the form of flexible environments, where audiences are invited to watch one or more videos. Dreams, role play and contemplative sequences most often place the viewer at the heart of the work.
