Pop I,Dock I, Letter, Dock II, Dot
1957 - 1962
At the heart of experimental poetry, the plurality of his practices makes Roth an unclassifiable figure.
Dieter Roth frequented Eugen Gomringer's concrete poetry circles, Daniel Spoerri and Claus Bremer's Darmstadt circle, but also Hansjorg Mayer's world of typography and graphic design. Beginning in 1956, he tested the limits of Bolex cameras and recorded several Super8 films and experimental essays. He captured fleeting and chaotic snatches, scratches and signs, the raw material of images, for, in his own words, "the everyday has always preoccupied me because it is so ferocious, so horrible".
