"The panels play the role of the specific shapes that I see. They don't represent them." (Kelly)
Ellsworth Kelly developed multiple variants of his monochrome panels: single or multiple, isolated or juxtaposed, traditional or unusual formats. He explored the potentialities of black and white as a colour pair around a diagonal axis. ln this almost square painting, the use of two adjoining panels allowed him to eliminate any risk of "representation". Any separation of the two colour fields by a painted line - leading to one colour dominating the other - is consequently removed, as is the distinction between external edges and internal division.
