Toni Grand backed up these unanswerable questions with examples, samples he brought back from his walks in the Camargue or in the Alpilles, which he subjected in his studio to a treatment unencumbered with considerations of inspiration. Factual, literary and faultless, the title of the work recounts its creation and describes its finished state. Like his friends Claude Viallat and Patrick Saytour, Grand was unquestionably of the Supports/Surfaces generation, but without identifying with it. His introspective sculpture was played out on another level. ln another circle?
