Ever since he ?rst started painting in the early 1960s, Gerhard Richter has made a point of changing both style and method on a cyclical basis, striving to analyse the dilemma between abstraction and ?guration. For the Abstrakte Bilder [Abstract Pictures] series, Gerhard Richter arbitrarily applied shapes and colours to a tiny format, then transposed his rough drafts onto huge canvases. Formally close to abstract expressionism, the artist relinquishes thick paint applied in spontaneous little brushstrokes, in favour of meticulously airbrushed smooth paint, bearing no traces of bodily movement.
