Bildübereins
(Tableau-sur-l'autre)
1991
Between 1991 and 1995, Baselitz created the Bildübereins series, thirty-nine paintings in which he superimposed abstract and figurative motifs to evoke a mental space.
ln this first painting in the series, the heads evoke bath the portraits of Elke, his wife, and the Dresdner Frauen [Women of Dresden] sculptures he just created in 1990. They seem to float over a broad horizontal green line - perhaps a tree trunk - surrounded by a white background, as in the representation of a memory. The footprints on the canvas are evidence of the painting being created on the ground, making the act of painting a choreographic ritual.
