Wagon-lit mit Eisenbett
(Wagon-lit au lit en fer)
2019
"The thematic scope of my work has narrowed considerably over the past few years. Essentially, I have increasingly isolated myself in my painting." (Baselitz)
Since 2015, Baselitz has become more interested in evanescent silhouettes that evoke the aging body. This work, made after his wife spent some time in hospital, confronts her body with the hard geometrical lines of a hospital bed. He used a matrix representing the shape of her silhouette, and plays with contrasting colours that evoke an x-ray image. Like a memory printed on the canvas, the painting translates the artist's mental image.
