Toren
1959
A member of Cobra for a time and attracted by Marxism, Constant became interested in an urbanism that was attentive to the "psychological and emotional functions of housing" in the mid-1950s.
Sensitive to the concept of "unitary urbanism" that was central to Situationist thought, Constant joined the group in 1958. For his exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 1959, he made around thirty "spatial constructions", including Toren. The work takes the form of a dynamic network allowing travel from one space to another and creating a sense of journey through the "rapid passage through varied ambiances", a key concept for Guy Debord.
