Composition à la main et aux chapeaux
1927
Léger's interest in film was revealed in 1916 when Guillaume Apollinaire took him to see a Charlie Chaplin film while he was on furlough.
This monumental painting refers to the film Fernand Léger made with artists Man Ray and Dudley Murphy, Le Ballet mécanique, ( 1923-1924). Transposing the jerky rhythm of moving images, Léger created a complex montage of successive coloured planes. Miniature or close-up views of everyday abjects line up as if unwinding on a roll of film. As a sort of farewell salute, the hand at the base holding a bowler hat is an allusion to Charlie Chaplin, "the image man" who fascinated Léger.
