Gotham Handbook
1994
Sophie Calle’s Gotham Handbook mingles first-hand accounts, photographs and narrated experiences. This work results from a collaboration between the artist and Paul Auster, author of the novel Léviathan, which took inspiration from Sophie Calle to paint the portrait of Maria, one of its protagonists, thus mixing reality with fiction. In Gotham Handbook, Sophie Calle has fun reversing the process, attempting to identify the personality of a character created on this occasion by Auster, while following his instructions, brought together under the title “Instructions for embellishing life in New York” through a series of artistic gestures.
