Les Autobiographies
1995
The series “Le Mari” forms part of a wider project called Histoires vraies, now published in the form of two books, that Sophie Calle worked on from 1988 to 2003. The nine panels combine text and photographs to tell the story of the artist and her ex-husband, in the manner of a personal diary. The work is typical of Sophie Calle’s approach, which combines autobiography and fiction, life and art, the individual and the social. Both narrator and agent, she interrogates the status of author-creator and artwork, in doing so also disorienting viewers, forcing them into the position of voyeuristic accomplices in her private life.
