(Dans le lit)

A pioneer of Abstract Expressionism, Guston radically reoriented his style in 1969 with his Beds series, marking a return to figurative art.
Here the artist reacts to the racial tensions that shook the United States in the 1960s. The figure is a member of the Ku Klux Klan, recognisable by his hood, painted in a cartoon style that makes him look ridiculous. This criminal figure haunts the imagination of the artist who examines the state of consciousness of the "Klansman" the night before or after his deeds. The work was sharply criticised for both its style and subject matter. lt reveals the artist's anxious spirit and also his dark humour.
