In 1973, Marcel Alocco began to develop his Fragments de la Peinture en Patchwork [Fragments of Painting in Patchwork], for which he folded a piece of fabric into several squares, painted each section and then tore it up. Here, he divided the cloth by folding along the diagonals. After mixing up the parts, he assembled them and sewed sections together with large stitches. Alocco described the new assembly, studded with cultural images to be deciphered, in the following way: "What have we here? Painting in fabric. Matter and colour, that's all. The image is passing through".
