Marcel Alocco began to develop his Fragments of Painting in Patchwork in 1973. He folded a fabric into several rectangles or squares, painted each portion, then tore them, fragmenting the fabric in accordance with the straight grain. After mixing the portions, he assembled them and sewed a part with large visible stitches, leaving some fragments to be hung freely around the patchwork. The new ensemble, studded with cultural images to be deciphered, was described by Alocco as follows: "What have we? Paint in the fabric. Material colour, that1 s all. The image is 'pass ing'."
