Gill practiced "an art of dissimulation". (Roger Cardinal, historian of outsider art)
Madge Gill made obsessive, minutely detailed variations on stereotypical oval-shaped faces with large almond-shaped eyes. These contrast with the rapidly sketched slim nases and small mouths. The faces float in large, labyrinth-like architectural decors while the bodies are almost always absent or scarcely defined, concealed under heavy garments. These scenes reflect the self-renunciation and passive states that women mediums had to adopt in their practice.
