''For me, a system is a sort of very concise set of rules which exists before the work and precisely determines its development and therefore its execution."
Rejecting subjectivity, François Morellet based his geometric abstraction on previously established rules and neutral execution. From 1952 onwards, he designed his first visual systems, such as 3x3. The work applies the formula suggested by the title: three lines and three columns brought together to form nine squares. Guided by a principle of alternation, the repeated pattern in each unit methodically changes direction: horizontal vertical, top-bottom, right-left.
