The paintings of Polish artist Wihelm Sasnal span the 1990s, a period of radical changes in the former East Europe. They seek to reflect the antagonism and contradictions between politics and private life in a state of flux. The artist abandons the abstract heritage of Polish painting to invent a multi-faceted figurative style. The work Sans titre (Anka), which depicts his wife, is akin to photography. Sans titre (Factory) with its flat shapes and uniform colours, is typical of the artist’s more melancholic style. The artist chooses his painting method according to the subject.
