"I managed to make [the colours] penetrate each other through the shape of the cross. which works better here than squares. The six colours combine well with each other in this system." (Morellet)
François Morellet converted ta Geometric abstraction after discovering the work of Zurich artist Max Bill in 1950. ln this rigorously square painting, a simple cross is repeated indefinitely in combination with the primary colours -yellow yellow, red and blue- and secondary colours -green, orange and violet - from which the work gets its title. This systematic repetition blurs the distinction between shape and ground in a fun way.
