Bernard Frize started painting in the late 1970s, in an artistic context that proclaimed "the death of painting". He explored more or less interventionist or automated methods and played with chance and the random behaviour of materials and colours, which led him to reflect on the act of painting. In this work, which evokes a traditional Japanese ceramic technique, the artist plays with the differences in thickness and dilution of the paint.
