Fille au miroir
1906
Georges Rouault began painting his first "Filles" in 1902, renting a studio not far from Place Clichy, inviting up the prostitutes who posed in exchange for the warmth of the room. In this nude the eyes reflected in the mirror are marked by an anxiety that belies the bold provocation of the pose. Similarly, Rouault combines a caricatural line recalling Honoré Daumier and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec with the sensual dignity of the modulating and contrasting colours. The artist does not judge, but reveals both the touching splendour of the woman’s body and her physical and moral suffering.
