Parfois je crache par plaisir sur le portrait de ma mère
1929
This work marks Dali's tumultuous entrance into Surrealism and his definitive break with his family environment.
Coming from André Breton's collection, this work was presented in the Galerie Goemans in Paris in 1929. Here the painter exploits the principle of psychic automatism in order to defend his right to express his conscious and unconscious fantasies, even if they transgress moral taboos. Borrowing from religious imagery, Dali reduces the representation of the Sacred Heart to an outline which he defiles with a profanatory inscription in ungainly handwriting. This use
of line drawing and text was unusual for the Catalan artist and is reminiscent of contemporary Surrealist leaflets.
