Distribution de la soupe de minuit aux Halles par l'Armée du Salut
vers 1930
This photograph by Arthaud is in keeping with the new social realism trend in Paris between the two wars.
At the turn of the 1930s, a new image of a picturesque and shady Paris came to the fore. Avant-garde photographers set their sights on the everyday life of working-class districts. Located right in the heart of the capital, Les Halles embodied this bustling night-life where traders and vagabonds mingled. Like photographers Germaine Krull and Eli Lotar in the same period, here Marcel Arthaud captured one of the emblematic subjects of this social and documentary photography: the soup kitchen.
