Relief n° 20 A - Sonorité
1946 - 1947
"I would like the structure of my Reliefs to be the exact and absolute expression of the inner reality that prompts them." (Domela)
Having joined De Stijl movement in 1924, César Domela distanced himself from the movement' s strict principles of orthogonality by introducing first the diagonal and then the curve. He made his first reliefs from 1929 onwards, using a variety of materials: wood, painted metal, copper, brass, then glass and Plexiglas. ln this work, the curved line creates the rhythm of the composition. The white triangle and the black shape are in opposition, while the brass, an energy conductor, links the whole with vitality.
