Gilbert & George champion an “art for all”, tackling big social questions such as religion or sexuality. The religious aspect of Praying finds an echo in the technique, which is not without suggesting a mediaeval stained glass window. Like phantoms in an attitude of prayer, the two artists appeal to “new kinds of religious truth and passion ”, before which they incline themselves in prayer to their own creations.
