The early 1980s saw Gilbert & George’s iconography become more complex. Through a system of symbol and allegory they juggled themes ranging from the erotic to the domestic, the political to the religious, all the while featuring themselves in their art. Up offers an ironic commentary on religious fervour, in which sex meets exaltation. Symbolic motifs play a growing role in their work as a way of making a direct impact on the viewer.
