[Le Cheval blanc]
[circa 1930 - 1931]
''I have remained on the side of peasant art and painted in the primitive style."
Between 1928 and 1934, Kazimir Malevich returned to figuration in a series of paintings of country subjects. This radical change caused by the reigning censorship of the time was accompanied by an attack on Stalinist policy with regard to the rural world. This is symbolised by a man with no arms, as if enclosed in a straitjacket in the colour of the Party. Although Malevich returns to the style of his youthful works, the composition still refers us to the principles of Suprematism: monochrome blocks and synthetic forms.
