Croix noire
[vers 1923 - 1926]
“ I destroyed the ring of the horizon and escaped from the circle of things, from the horizon-ring that confines the artist and the forms of nature...”
Kazimir Malevich thus defined his quest for a pure art, Suprematism. Out of the square, the absolute basis of his system, the cross and the circle are born. This little cube of plaster composed of a cross formed by two plates of painted glass probably belongs to an ensemble of "architectones" that have now disappeared. These plaster volumes enabled Malevich to move from the plane to the third dimension.
