The lines of this chair were inspired by the sturdiness of the English Arts and Crafts style of furniture, and by the clean lines of Japanese furniture.
The Liverpool Chair is one of the emblematic objects produced by Memphis Milano. It developed out of Sowden's research into hybridising references. He made another version at the same time. To the geometric rigour of the object he added a “surface décor” of black and white horizontal stripes on the seat and back. The two versions stem from an experiment in which the structural nature of the same object can be modified merely by adding a motif.
