Mobilier Prototype pour une chaise
1981
This chair is presented as an assemblage of planes in which colour architectures form, in reference to Piet Mondrian's neoplasticism.
George Sowden made this chair prototype for the first Memphis exhibition, in Milan in 1981. Trained as an architect, he designed it as a “microarchitecture''. By using elementary geometry combined with a palette of primary colours, he provided an ironic take on a certain “universalism” of form, dear to the modern movement. The object articulates design, sculpture and architecture through an interplay of coloured surfaces that break free from scale.
