With his "matterist" paintings, Millares fought against the ambient conservatism of Franco's Spain.
After a figurative period inspired by the archaic cultures of the Canary Islands where he was born, Manolo Millares commenced a shift toward abstraction in 1951. He moved to Madrid in 1955, where he began to use poor materials with uneven reliefs. On the rough, torn canvas, patched with string, Millares tore, splashed, packaged and tied. With these gestures associated with a sort of urgency, the harmony of the black, white and red lends a tragic allure to this austere picture.
