Ornements suprématistes
1927 / 1978
A key figure in the Russian avant-garde, Malevich turned away from figurative painting in 1915 to create an art based on elementary forms: the square, the circle and the cross. Then he stopped working with flat surfaces in favour of volume. From 1926 to 1927, he made models he called “architectones”, including Suprematist Ornaments. The cube becomes the primary element: the perfect volume, white, with no concrete purpose, deploying itself in space.
