With his dises, Léger reflected the perpetual mechanical movement that drives cities and the world.
After his nerve-racking experience in the trenches, Fernand Léger could only marvel at the rhythms of the city. The visual ruptures presented by urban landscapes became pretexts for complex compositions. The stencilled letters of advertising posters are interwoven with geometrical forms inspired by railway signals and mechanical elements. Their dynamic organisation produces the effect of a machine-city. Here Léger develops the artistic vocabulary that would henceforth be his hallmark.
