Guillaume Apollinaire
1918
This portrait of Guillaume Apollinaire as a machine is Picabia's posthumous homage to his poet friend who died of the Spanish flu in 1918.
That year, Picabia continued his secret method of taking Latin sayings from the dictionary. Although the phrase "Maître de soi-même'' [Master of one self] cannot be linked to any quotation, the statement "Je ne mourrai pas toutentier" [I will not completely die] (in which the artist changed the speaker to "Tu ne mourras pas tout entier" [You will not completely die]), and "la race irritable des poètes" [the irritable race of poets] come from the Epistles of Horace. This portrait also pays homage to Apollinaire, first man to subvert, in 1900, this "readymade" material from the dictionary in his art criticism and his poetry
