Memories From the Eastern Front / Boney piles
Radu Jude et Adrian Cioflâncă / Taras Tomenko
19 Jun 2022
The event is over
A poster of the former USSR on a façade, and right next to it, a second-hand store advertises “European quality”. In eastern Ukraine, the war opposing Ukrainian troops and pro-Russian separatists, ravaging the east of the country since 2014, has left houses as bomb sites and, everywhere, desolation.
This is where Nastya and Yarik live. With the other children, they take over the ruins and dumps as their playground, drawing on their innate resilience to trump their traumatic experiences.
As the tenth film by Ukrainian filmmaker Taras Tomenko, Boney Piles has just won the Award for Best Documentary and the FIPRESCI prize at the 2022 goEast festival in April.
“The catastrophic events in the Donbas are not just about material destruction: there is also spiritual destruction. Terykony [Boney Piles] is a film about children who are like flowers without water.” Yaroslav Pidgora-Gviazdovsky, detector.media, 19 February 2022

A photo album as a silent witness of History. Beautifully bound and carefully labelled, it retraces the history of the 6th Regiment of the Romanian army during the war years 1941 and 1942, as allies of Nazi Germany fighting the Soviets.
Radu Jude (Golden Bear at the 2021 Berlin International Film Festival for Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn) delves into photo archives from WWII, exhumed by historian Adrian Cioflâncă, and the involvement of the Romanian army in the Holocaust, a work of historical memory that he has unceasingly committed to, using documentary and fiction.
“I tried several soundtracks – music, voiceover and ambient sound –, we opted for a silent film. Ultimately, Stan Brakhage’s teachings helped us: most of his films are silent because he wanted the audience to focus on the footage. We want the same of our public: to look closely at the pictures in a fresh light, and analyse them.” Radu Jude and Adrian Cioflâncă
