Mycelium Running
2018 - 2021
This installation oscillates between the natural and the artificial, the organic and the architectural, and was inspired by traditional ornaments in south-west Saudi Arabia.
Handmade with natural materials, Zahrah Al Ghamdi's works revisit the skills of Aseeri craft and architecture and are informed by a reflection on memory, loss and resurgence. Here, the artist made hundreds of leather pieces that she painstakingly cut, sewed, stuffed, boiled and burned. Grouped together and spread out over the walls and floor, the elements resemble a living organism, whether plant or animal, that seems to proliferate and adapt to its environment.
