Mathieu Kleyebe Abonnenc's works seek to shift points of view and question established relations of power.
Abonnenc explores colonial histories and their ramifications in the contemporary world. Louis-Ernest Barrias's Guyanese monument dedicated to Victor Schoelcher, the French abolitionist, serves as the starting point for the photogravures and the sculpture. Abonnenc's viewpoint deconstructs this representationof the abolition of slavery, thus suggesting the ambiguity of the distribution of roles between the dominating and the dominated. The sculpture is a cast of the leg of a freed slave. For the artist, this negative is a fragment of a body waiting to be reinvented.
