Schwanger I
1978
From 1975, Soltau focused on performance, photography and video in order to "become part of the image" and use her body as a material.
Building on her reflection on the female condition, from 1978 onwards Annegret Soltau questioned the experience of her own pregnancy. ln Schwanger I, she cut her body into pieces. Several copies of the same photograph were torn up, stitched together and superimposed to create a distorted picture of the overall figure. These physical scars are suggestive of her psychological state and the tension between motherhood and art, sometimes difficult to reconcile.
