Mediumistic creators evoke the spiritualist pretext to rid themselves of all creative responsibilities and to express themselves in complete freedom.
Art historian Michel Thévoz developed the idea that spiritualist creators seized on mediumship as a sort of "spiritual alibi" for an artistic vocation that they dared not avow. For a miner like Augustin Lesage, it was inadmissible, extravagant, even unthinkable to draw, paint or aspire to be an artist. Dictating spirits became a useful and more plausible justification for his surroundings than a veritable artistic vocation.
