Phallisme 1
1958
These works created in Istanbul, called Phallisme, present erotic subjects inspired by Sade and Lautréamont.
The use of natural colours, made by Arslan himself, and scraped surfaces are the first signs of experimental composition, evoking the influence of Paul Klee and the prehistoric masters on the young artist. The intertwined human and animal forms conceptualise sexual impulses as the primary act of primitive beings, a fertile tension between primeval times and a present to be built. Musing on the same questions, André Breton wished to include these works in his 1959 E.R.O.S. exhibition.
