Arture 781. Journal
2015
As a kind of reverse diary, Arslan's final series, Journal (2011-2017), offers an opportunity to revisit his work and sources.
At the age of 78, Arslan imagined a tale recounting his experiences. It shows the influence of Karagöz, a character from Turkish shadow theatre, and Ubu, a character created by Alfred Jarry (Arture 708). Collage and drawing merge. Playing with his meticulous technique, as in his tools for optical illusion in Arture 781, the artist also plays with our perception: while in Arture 736,a piece of the work detaches itself from the background to proclaim the story told by the text, in Arture 751, dedicated to the origins of writing, the collage of manuscripts remains imperceptible.
