Ausfegen
1972 - 1988
The action in Ausfegen [Sweeping Up] takes place in West Berlin during the demonstrations on May 1st, 1972.
After the crowd passed Karl Marx square, Joseph Beuys and two of his students began to sweep up. The rubbish from the square was gathered in bags from his political group, Organisation for Direct Democracy, and then spread out in the René Block gallery. By this means, the artist, who hoped to see a "free democratic socialism" as opposed to what he called the "facade democracies" of the Eastern and Western blocs, aimed to demonstrate the necessity of surpassing ideologies in order to achieve an effective transformation of our societies.
